FAQ

edu email FAQ

When is an edu address useful?
It is useful when a sign-up screen needs an edu-style address and you want to receive the verification mail, or when you are testing a sign-up flow and mail delivery as a developer or QA. Mail really arrives at the address, so you can check both form validation and mail reception in one go.
Can I use it for student verification or student discounts?
Student verification usually accepts only mail issued by a school. This address is not issued by a school, so it cannot prove enrollment. For student discounts and similar benefits, apply with your school email. It must not be used to pass a verification under false eligibility, which the Terms of Service also prohibit.
Can anyone use an edu address?
An edu address is created as soon as you open the page. Some domains are for members only, though; when you cannot use one, an address on a regular domain is created instead. Members can keep using the dedicated domain.
Is it OK for development and testing?
Yes. It works well for checking whether a sign-up form validates the domain format and whether the verification mail is sent properly. The address and mail are cleaned up after the time runs out, so there is nothing to delete afterwards. Bulk automated use is not allowed under the Terms.
What if the verification mail does not arrive?
Wait a minute or two first. If it still does not arrive, request the verification mail again in the service, before the address expires. If the service blocks temporary addresses, press 'New address' to try another domain.
What if the service blocks this domain?
Some services block temporary email domains. Press 'New address' to get another domain and try again; the membership also unlocks premium domains. If you tell us which service blocked you, it really helps us keep our domains in shape: use 'Report a blocked domain' on the report page.
How long are the address and mail kept?
60 minutes by default. If you need more, press the 'Extend 30 min' button under the mailbox: up to 2 times as a guest, unlimited once you log in. After that, the address and the mail are deleted from our server.
Do I need to sign up or pay?
No. An address is ready the moment you open the page. Receiving mail is free without an account; only some domains and features like changing your address are part of the membership.
Can I send mail from this address?
No, it is receive-only. Use it for verification mail, notices and newsletters you receive.
Is the mail I receive safe?
Mail is deleted automatically after the retention time. But anyone who knows an address can read the mail sent to it, so avoid receiving sensitive mail such as passwords or financial details at a temporary address.
